DC Mission Trip
Wednesday, July 19, 2017-Day 4
Bill Garner

I am writing this blog post en route to Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland. We are more than half way through our time together in D.C., but so far, our experience has been nothing short of amazing. We thought it might be a good idea to let our mission team enjoy some extra sleep this morning. Of course, with high school students, a sleep late day usually means an excuse to stay up late the night before, so needless to say, not everyone caught up on his sleep. However, several of the guys mentioned to me that late night talks are opportunities to get real with each other and dive deep into intentional conversations about what really matters. In a world of superficiality, these ambassadors for Christ are not afraid to be authentic with each other. That is quite rare in the world of teenaged males.

We ventured over to the Smithsonian National Zoo for a time of sightseeing and lunch, and then we headed over to Anacostia and the Woodland Terrace neighborhood for the third day of our kids’ camp. Day three was definitely the most difficult. Just to give you a little background into this community, Woodland Terrace is the most impoverished neighborhood in Anacostia. Most of the children come from single parent homes, and it’s rare for a father to be present in their lives. Many of the children are exposed to circumstances that are truly heart-wrenching. For example, at today’s camp, a child who had been incredibly enthusiastic Monday and Tuesday was noticeably quiet and visibly disturbed about something. As Jack (not his name) and I began to talk today, he opened up to me that his uncle had been stabbed last night in his house. This particular home houses at least 10 children—brothers, sisters, and cousins. Sadly, violence along with drugs and teen pregnancy are common issues that these children are surrounded by on a daily basis. From the outside looking in, our task of bringing hope to this community seems impossible. But isn’t that what God does best? He’s takes a seemingly hopeless circumstance and opens an opportunity.

For this week, our high school students have been pouring into the lives of these children, and we do this is the name of Jesus because it’s the name of Jesus that is above every other name. In the gospel of John, Jesus made a number of “I Am” statements to declare the power that He has over every area and need of our lives. In John 6:35, Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” Just prior to making this claim, Jesus had performed the miracle of the feeding of the 5000. In this miracle, we see that not only does God have power to take care of our physical needs—hunger and thirst—but he also has power to meet that hunger and thirst that all humans have for significance, purpose, and unconditional love.

In John 8:12, Jesus makes yet another “I am” statement when he says, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Shortly after saying this, Jesus would have an encounter with a blind man, and he demonstrates power once again not only over physical needs, but he also has power to help all of us see God for who he really is. Later in John 11:25, Jesus boldly makes a claim that He has power even over death. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.

As we taught these lessons to the children, our prayer has been that they, too, will discover and experience the supernatural power of God to help resurrect a community that has been decimated by poverty and brokenness. After each lesson, the children participate in a craft activity and discuss the verse of the day. We try to save time for some discussion at the end, but weather combined with a pretty boisterous group has proved challenging. However, our high school students have embraced the task of planting seeds in the hearts of these children, so we will wrap up our final day by setting aside some extra time for intentional conversations and prayer. We know our time here in D.C. is short and our influence is limited, but we believe the promises in Isaiah that state, "So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

After camp, we boarded the bus, sweat and all, and headed over to Camden Yards in Baltimore for a time of fellowship. We enjoyed “All You Can Eat” seats in the left field Picnic Perch, and it was just another opportunity to build community. We even have a true Oriole fan on our mission team. David Stone was sporting his Oriole apparel, and just in case you were curious, Baltimore won 10-2.

We wrapped up the evening with another late-night team time. Vann Walthall, Will Christopher, and James Childs had an opportunity to share their testimonies and then receive encouragement and affirmation from their peers. In a teen culture where tearing down and ridiculing others is the norm, these young men are experiencing the power of what real affirmation and Christian encouragement looks like. It’s a blessing to witness the authenticity that takes place in this setting. One of our chaperones, Bigtime Ministries board member Bobby Chandler says it best. “I wish more parents could see what I am seeing.”

Bobby Peterson closed the evening with an exhortation to our team. He called all of us to take this momentum that we have created here in D.C. and advance the cause of Christ in Mountain Brook. In Bobby’s words, “It’s time to flip the switch.”

Cars Chandler spoke up with these words. He stated, “It doesn’t make sense for us to focus on one week in Washington D.C. when we have so much power and influence back at home in our own community. These men are fired up and ready to change the world. I am so proud of them, and it has been an honor to serve alongside them. One of my greatest joys is to see students that I have taught follow Jesus and grow as disciples. They truly are a blessing.

God Bless!

DC Mission Trip-Day 3
Bobby Peterson

As I write about yesterday,  I believe it is important to give some context of how amazing these high school students are.  I have been so impressed by their generosity, intentionality, friendliness and hunger to know more of our Heavenly Father.  They bring an excitement to our mission with Kids Konnection,  but also bring life to everywhere they go.  It's incredible to see by day 3 that we are bonding and encountering Jesus together on a daily basis.  It honestly reminds me of Jesus and his disciples.  There was something so authentic and incredible about their relationships with each other that were filled with honor and life.  Our kids are maintaining that with each other.  I am excited we still have a couple of days left together but incredibly excited to see these relationships expand beyond D.C.

Onto Yesterday.  Yesterday we were feeling the consequences of running our team time so late, mental and physical fatigue. Everyone had a tired look on their face as we boarded our bus to go to the national spy museum.  But as we got off the bus and entered the spy museum everything changed.  There was a certain burst of energy that came forth from our students.  They were pumped to do the spy museum and it showed as we came up with our own secret spy names.  This museum is AWESOME.  Their activities, exercises, games, and overall the design of the museum was fantastic.  You could learn about Revolutionary War spies, to World War spies, all the way to current spies.  It was definitely a fan favorite from our group.
After the museum we headed off to lunch at buffalo wild wings for some lunch.  Needless to say that was also a fan favorite within our group.  These lunches offer an awesome time of great community with our students.  They bring certain qualities out of each other that resemble what Jesus did with the many people he had met with in the new testament.  Jesus always called the Gold out of people.  He always spoke life and never death with his words and our guys are grasping these truths day in and day out.
After lunch we headed out to Kids Konnection.  It was another amazing day with these incredibly loving kids.  These kids are filled with joy despite their circumstances.  They run and laugh and play with so much excitement that it's tough to leave them everyday.  Yesterday the kids of Anacostia had an action packed day.  Hamp Sisson led an awesome game of Sharks and Minnows that had all of our students and the kids involved.  It was incredible to see the kids connecting with our students.  After the games we sat down and were entertained with music and skits that engaged the kids on every level.  From peel the banana, to bushy tail, to skits about Jesus' miracles, the kids had a blast!  Our theme verse of yesterday was John 10:11 "I am the good Shepherd, the good Shepherd lays down his life for his sheep."  The kids then did a craft creating sheep with cotton balls and crazy google eyes.  We loved having those kids memorizing those verses and realizing how great our God is!
After Kids Konnection we came back to Washington Seminar Center and cleaned up before heading to a quick dinner, and then to the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials.  The memorials were breathtaking for me and our students.  I have never been to D.C. but being a history major I had all kinds of emotions when seeing these incredible monuments and memorials.  Seeing the Vietnam memorial and the 55,000 names of deaths from our military on this monument was breathtaking for our leaders and our students.
After our tour of the monuments Mac Thomson shared his testimony with our group during team time.  Our guys felt so encouraged by Mac that we encouraged Mac for about 20 minutes.  Mac's testimony consisted of talking about the struggles of having friends who are christians and aren't christians.  He expressed the love he had for both of them and that sharing his faith with both of groups of guys is something he is looking to do.  Mac did an incredible job sharing and we are excited for more testimonies for the week.  God is doing some amazing things within our group and we are excited for more !

We will update again tomorrow!

DC Mission Trip Day 2
William Galloway

Day 2 on Capitol Hill was a fantastic day and kept us fully occupied from start to finish. We had a couple early birds wake up and run around the city through the streets and down to National Mall. Everyone was awake by about 9:00 and had breakfast. Once all were ready, we left for the Pentagon Memorial around 10:30 and were out for the day until 6:00 pm.

At the Pentagon Memorial, we all spent time in prayer for our nation. The Bible calls us to be the hands and feet of the Lord, so we spent time praying that He would use us to help further His kingdom. We want to reach not only the children at "Kids Konnection" but also be reflections of Christ in everything we do, from walking down the streets of D.C. to our interactions with one another. We also spent time praying for the victims of the September 11th attacks and their families. It was great to break off individually and spend time with the Lord in prayer. Personally, when I prayed for active military, I couldn't help but lift up my friends Duncan Morris, Stav Pappas and Ryan Kirk. As you may know, these three guys just graduated MBHS with me and are attending the  U.S. Naval Academy, West Point and Air Force, respectively. Their courage and bravery to train to serve our country made me very thankful and appreciative of our nation's military. Lastly, we all prayed and thanked God for our freedom. Not only our freedom as a country, but the freedom we have in Christ through what he did on the cross.

We departed the memorial around noon and walked across a parking lot to a mall and spread out for lunch. We spent about 2.5 hours refueling and checking out different stores. Guys bought a variety of hats, including anything from a Chicago Bulls "6x World Champions" to a camo "bucket cap." After our lunch excursion, we headed towards Anacostia for our "Kids Konnection" orientation. We were instructed on the best ways to interact with the kids and who will be there. Over the years, lots of relationships have been formed with different children and it was great to see familiar faces.

The "Kids Konnection" camp ran from 4:00 until 5:30. In an action packed 90 minutes, we sang, danced, played games, listened to God's word, did a craft and had a snack. Monday's theme was God and who he is. Bill brought the message to the kids and used the book of Genesis to explain that God created us. In addition to Genesis, Bill used Colossians 1:15 as our theme verse for the day: "He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation." Before each child received a snack at the end, he/she was required to recite the verse. It was great to see these kids get fired up yelling the verse, although they were probably more excited for the goldfish and capri-sun.

We came home and got ready for dinner, which was at "Pi Pizzeria." At a nice long sit down dinner, we were able to relax and take in highlights from the day. After dinner, Director of Navigation, Harrison Clark led us on a walk to the National Mall where we walked outside the white house and prayed for our country again. We then walked to the Washington Monument and past the Capitol Building on our way back to the house. All in all we got a nice 3-4 mile walk in, much to Billy G's dismay.

We finished the night with an exceptional team time with Will Kimberlin sharing his testimony followed by an affirmation circle, where we went around and each guy affirmed another.

We are excited for Tuesday and what it will bring. Be on the lookout for our next blog post.
Blessings

DC Mission Trip-Day 1
Bobby Peterson

Sunday The First Day

Yesterday was a great start to our trip.  We all got up around 8 AM and headed over to a great DC breakfast spot within walking distance of where we are staying.  After we got our fill of waffles, pancakes, omelets and sausages, we headed over to Church at the National Community Church.  It was a great time of fellowship as we learned about sharing our story and how that draws others into relationship with us as we share our own story.  After church we headed to Baltimore to enjoy the National Aquarium.

We enjoyed the relaxing afternoon of walking around the aquarium looking at all these exotic fish, puffins, sharks, and of course the dolphin show! After the aquarium we walked just a hundred yards to the Hard Rock Cafe and had dinner and community with each other.  After dinner we headed back to DC to have our first team time of the trip.
Our team time was amazing.  The focus of the night was to share what we were excited about, what was maybe holding us back from sharing the gospel, and how to eliminate those fears.  We saw a ton of our guys speak up and share about their excitements their fears and what's holding them back.  It was an amazing time as we watched God show up and prepare us for the week ahead of us and also bring such great breakthrough in our team on the very first night!
We got to learn a little bit from Romans 6 last night and we felt that it was something that energized us for our mission for the week!

"We know that our old self was nailed to the cross with Him in order that our body of sin would be made ineffective and inactive for evil that we might no longer be slaves of sin."-Romans 6:6.

Today we head out to Kids Konnection and towards another incredible day in DC.  Be praying for the Spirit to lead us like never before.  It's going to be another amazing day.

Blessings,
  Bobby Peterson

DC Mission Trip

Hello friends and family members,
We launched this blog for people to read about our upcoming mission trip to Washington D.C. on Saturday July 15th through the 21st! This blog will update you all on what we have been doing during the week and some incredible encounters we will have with God during our trip, so be on the look out!

Our students have been preparing mentally, physically and most of all spiritually for this incredible trip.  We have been meeting at "The Bighouse" twice a month for the past couple of months to prepare for our trip.  During these meetings we worship together, we pray together, and we discuss our expectancy of what we believe is going to happen on this trip.  The students are excited, I am excited, we are all excited!

A little background of what we will be doing:

We have around 36 high school students who are giving up part of their summer to come serve the D.C. community through a ministry called Kids Konnection.  We will be doing sidewalk bible studies, games, small groups, and arts and crafts with the inner city youth of D.C.  During these days we will develop deep relationships with these kids and ministers that will hopefully last a lifetime.  I ask that you all pray that God would develop and lead our students to share the gospel confidently and boldly with these kids.  That the kids would leave being transformed by the Holy Spirit.

We also will be visiting some of the famous sites around D.C.  We will be visiting the capitol, the Smithsonian, the international spy museum, the national aquarium and get to go to the famous Camden Yards to see the Baltimore Orioles play.  All of these awesome activities will be followed by our own team time where we will worship together and pray together and come together as a community of believers that are ready to see God move within our community.

I have been praying that our trip will not only impact the lives of the people we connect with but also the lives of our students.  God led me to the story of Joshua during our prayer time, specifically Joshua 1:3, "I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses."  Wherever we set our feet this week we are doing it all as the hands and feet of Jesus.  God is giving us ground to walk on and to declare His as we partner with other believers with the same mission.  Our high school guys realize this and are prepared to walk in union with each other, other believers and with the Holy Spirit to bring hope, joy, love, and peace wherever we go during D.C. I couldn't be more pumped to serve with these high school leaders.

Please pray for our trip, our students, and for the kids we will see on a day in day out basis.

Updates will follow each day.

Blessings,
  Bobby Peterson
